Ending inequities in kidney transplantation

Barbara Breckenridge and I are on a mission to end inequities African Americans face to getting a kidney transplant.

Barbara received a kidney transplant 23 years ago. I am a transplant surgeon and I lead the transplant program at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY.

In 2020 we received a grant to assemble a local community advisory board and strategize solutions.

We are building a peer mentoring program.

We are developing educational products, like readable print materials and short educational videos.

We host virtual support meetings and run a Facebook support group .

What’s next? We are crafting a grant application to fund a trial of a digital education and peer mentoring intervention tailored to African Americans to address disparities in access to live donor kidney transplantation. Read here for more About Our Partnership.

Our group includes kidney transplant recipients, people seeking transplants, donors, and care partners. Interested in joining? Email
