Ending inequities in kidney transplantation

Barbara Breckenridge and I are on a mission to end inequities African Americans face to getting a kidney transplant.

Barbara received a kidney transplant 23 years ago. I am a transplant surgeon and I lead the transplant program at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY.

In 2020 we received a grant to assemble a local community advisory board and strategize solutions.

The board then formed a non-profit called Kidney Health Together that provides peer mentoring and runs a healthy kidney pantry.

We run a Facebook support group for kidney patients and their supporters.

We look at ways to improve organizational health literacy at the transplant center. We reworked the transplant program’s brochures and form letters— making them clear and to the point. We are developing educational products, like short educational videos.

We help connect people with local services in the Buffalo area. This includes free legal aid, protein shakes, help with transportation or small expenses, help getting Medicaid and services.

Our group includes kidney transplant recipients, people seeking transplants, donors, and care partners. Interested in joining? Email contacttransplantinfo@gmail.com
